たとえ人類とおのれの生き方を救うために英雄的な死を遂げたとしても、エリートの一員でなければ、君の存在はないに等しい(『スター・ウォーズ』シリーズから)。

こういう状況は、シリーズ中何度も何度も登場するが、宇宙要塞の初代『デス・スター』への攻撃のときにきわめて顕著に示される。

この攻撃には20機から30機ほどの1人乗り戦闘機が出撃する。そして帰還できたのは、ルーク[・スカイウォーカー]とウェッジ[・アンティリーズ]、それにYウイングに乗っていた1人だけだ(もちろん、ハン[・ソロ]とチューバッカはいるが、この2人は最初の攻撃隊には入っていなかった)。

だから、この戦いは素晴らしい成功だったとはいえ、反乱同盟軍はきわめて優秀で勇敢なパイロットを17人ないしは27人失ったということだ。それなのに、反乱軍はみんな、Xウイングから下りてくるルークに歓声をあげるだけだ。ルークも歓声をあげ、レイア姫を抱きしめ、喜びに酔いしれる……やがて、R2-D2が戦いでひどく損傷したことに気づいたとたん、ルークはひどく取り乱す。それはまるで、仲間の人間が死んでいくことなど、たとえ仲のよい友人がそのなかに入っていようと、たいしたことではないかのようだ。作り直しの効くかわいい機械を失うかもしれないとなると悲しがるのに。
